Planning a wedding that’s magical, memorable, and kid-friendly? Including children in your wedding can add charm, laughter, and the sweetest candid moments—but it also requires a little extra thought to keep things running smoothly.

As a wedding celebrant, I’ve worked with countless couples to create relaxed, inclusive ceremonies that keep kids happy, parents stress-free, and the vibe joyful for everyone. Whether you’re including your own children in your ceremony, inviting just a few nieces and nephews or a whole group of tiny guests, here are my top tips for hosting a beautiful, child-friendly wedding ceremony.

1. Create a Kid-Friendly Zone

Designate a small area near the back or side of the ceremony space just for kids. Lay out picnic blankets, cushions, and quiet toys to keep little ones comfy and entertained without taking focus away from the ceremony.

Bonus tip: If your budget allows, hire a babysitter or professional childminder to supervise this space. Parents will appreciate the chance to relax and enjoy the ceremony fully.

2. Activity Packs Work Wonders

Kids love surprises! Create personalised activity bags filled with:

  • Crayons and colouring books

  • Stickers or fidget toys

  • A small, non-messy snack (e.g., crackers or fruit snacks)

  • A spill-proof water bottle

Distribute them just before the ceremony starts to keep things fresh and exciting. These wedding activity packs for kids are lifesavers when it comes to quiet engagement.

3. Involve Kids in the Ceremony

Want to make your wedding ceremony with children feel even more special? Include them! Depending on their age, kids can:

  • Walk down the aisle as flower girls or ring bearers

  • Hold cute signs (like “Here comes the bride!”)

  • Hand out programmes or confetti

  • Participate in a symbolic moment

Giving children a role makes them feel important and focused—and the photos will melt your heart.

4. Keep the Ceremony Short and Sweet

When young children are present, timing is everything. I would suggest we aim for a ceremony that’s around 15–20 minutes long, and try to avoid nap times or meal times when possible. A short wedding ceremony is often ideal for families.

5. Offer Light Snacks and Water

Hungry or thirsty kids = cranky kids. Offer light, clean snacks and water in spill-proof containers to keep little ones happy. Place them discreetly in the kids’ area or activity packs so they can enjoy them quietly.

6. Embrace the Chaos (Just a Bit!)

Let’s be honest—kids will be kids. A few whispers, giggles, or wiggles are perfectly normal and actually add to the charm of a family-friendly wedding ceremony.

As your celebrant, I’ll always keep the tone light and flowing, without drawing attention to minor interruptions. If things get a bit too lively, your designated kid zone or easy aisle access makes stepping out simple and stress-free.

7. Plan a Post-Ceremony Outlet

After the ceremony, give children a way to burn off some energy. Try setting up:

  • Lawn games

  • A colouring or craft table

  • A quiet movie corner during the reception

This creates a fun, relaxed vibe and helps both parents and kids enjoy the celebration even more.

Final Thoughts

Including children in your wedding day brings a wonderful layer of joy, authenticity, and love. With a bit of thoughtful planning, your ceremony can be just as magical for the little guests as it is for the grown-ups.

If you're dreaming of a child-friendly wedding that’s inclusive, relaxed, and filled with heart, I’d love to help you create a ceremony everyone will remember—with plenty of smiles (and maybe a few happy squeals) along the way.

Let’s make your wedding day beautiful for every guest—big and small. ✨
